Josephine Sarah Pittman passed away peacefully in her daughters home on June 12, 2005, in San Jose, California, at the age of 87. Josephine or Dody dedicated her life to education. She was a devoted and loving teacher for over 50 years, starting her career at eighteen in a one room school house. She left her home state of Pennsylvania to teach in Taft and then in Bakersfield at both Standard and Highland elementary schools. In her career as a first grade teacher she taught thousands of children as well as an illiterate adult how to read. Dody is survived by her husband, Robert Dale Pittman, a retired fourth grade teacher and her daughter, Janet (Rusty) Pittman, a 7th grade teacher at Davis Middle School in San Jose. Josephine inspired both husband and daughter to enter the education field. Josephine embraced a belief passed down from her mother who would say, If you have extra money, put it in your childs head and she did just that. She was the concept of unconditional love and devotion to her daughter. Representing strength of character and selfless values. Since retired, Dody is best known for putting around Oildale in her little red Volkswagen. She has met and maintained many wonderful friends through the years. She will be deeply missed by all. Cards and well wishes can be sent to her daughter, Rusty and Bob Pittman at 39 Kent Court, San Jose, California 95139. Legacy.com Published in the Bakersfield Californian on 7/17/2005.
