In 1936, she earned a Bachelor in Law from the University of the West, and was one of four women to pass the State Bar that year. In 1938, she married Arthur Quarnstrom, then lived and practiced law in Long Beach and Bakersfield, where she was active in local PTAs, Girl Scouts, local and State Business & Professional Women and Toastmistresses, became judge of the Weedpatch Judicial District in 1957 and campaign manager in Kern County for Stanley Mosk in 1960. In 1980, she and Art moved to Moorpark for their truly golden years. Art died in 1987. Ellen is survived by daughters, Gail Morales of Malibu and Jane Sokolow of Oakland; grandchildren, Molly Hayden of Portland, OR, and Montano Sokolow of Hollywood; half brother, Dan Miller of Annandale, VA; sister-in-law, Olivia Miller of Torrance, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
