All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/obits/obitsca/obitsca.htm ********************************************************** File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: K T bluewolf@onemain.com March 27, 2005, 5:14 pm The Bakersfield Californian Helen Jain Ragsdale Sept. 3, 1913 - Mar. 25, 2005 A memorial service for Helen Jain Ragsdale will be held in Greenlawn Memorial Chapel, 3700 River Blvd., Tuesday, March 29, 2005, at 3:00 p.m. Final interment will be completed by Pohlmans Mortuary of Russell, Kansas. Burial will be in Grand Center Cemetery near Waldo, Kansas where Helen will be laid to rest in a plot next to her beloved father. Helen was born September 3, 1913 to Clarence and Edna (Terry) Jain, near Waldo, Kansas. Helen was preceded in death by her husbands, parents, and sisters, Vera Garton, Velma Blankenship, and Orvetta Adams. She is survived by her brother, Terry W. Jain of Luray, Kansas; her stepchildren, Dennis and Kathy Ragsdale of Tehachapi, CA; Mrs. Wilma J. Brown of Vevay, Indiana; Donald Allen and Harold Allen; and nephew and niece, Stuart and Debby Ragsdale of Bakersfield, CA. Helen also had special friends and relatives who would visit her during her convalescent stay at Parkview Real Rest Home. Helen attended elementary schools in Waldo, Kansas and graduated from the local high school in 1931. She was an elementary school teacher in Russell County rural schools for three years and then left the teaching profession to work as a typist during WWII. In 1948 Helen married Alva Allen of Vevay, Indiana. While living in Phoenix, Arizona, Mr. Allen passed away in 1961. Helen then moved to Bakersfield, California where she was employed at the Casa Moore Furniture Store for 11 years. In 1965, she married John L. Ragsdale, a fireman for the Bakersfield City Fire Department. Before her retirement in 1976, Helen worked for Dunlaps Department Store for over four years. Over the years Helen shared stories of her past with her family. Some of her favorite memories include winning school art contests, placing third in state English achievement tests, playing the saxophone in high school and college bands, assisting professors with grading and typing academic papers, winning ribbons at the county fair for her needlepoint work, and being involved in her church activities. Helen has always loved reading and completing crossword puzzles. Up until her death, she still actively read daily, The Bakersfield Californian and her hometown, Russell newspaper.
