She was born on February 23, 1921, to Samuel and Virginia (Vawter) Payden in Arkansas City, Kansas. She graduated from high school in Arkansas City and moved to Bakersfield, CA in 1940, where she first attended Bakersfield Junior College and then graduated from UCLA in 1943 with a BA in Spanish. On Christmas Day of 1942 she married Douglas Rappley at Lowry AFB in Denver, CO. In 1954 they moved to Houghton, MI, where she taught English, American Literature and Spanish at Michigan Technological University for 17 years. Upon retirement they moved to Green Valley, AZ, in 1984. Her many hobbies included crafts, miniatures, decorating, and collecting colored glass. She also played tennis, golf, bridge, and enjoyed swimming and shopping. She was a member of the DAR, AAUW, Portage Lake United Church, the Country Club of Green Valley and the Antiques and Collectibles Club of Green Valley. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Douglas, who resides at 202 E Paseo Chuparosas, Green Valley, AZ 85614; her son, David of Milwaukee, WI, her daughter Susan (Mark) Strang of Williamsburg, VA; and 2 grandchildren, Jeffrey Strang of Durham, NC and Julie (Capt. Andy) Shurtleff of Panama City, FL. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. A graveside service was held at Riverview Cemetery in Arkansas City, Kansas, on Monday, August 15 at 11:00 a.m. A memorial service will be held in Green Valley on Saturday, September 3, at 11:00 at Valley Presbyterian Church.
