Reade Sept. 17, 1913 - Aug. 14, 2005 Private services will be held in the Hillcrest Memorial Chapel for Mr. Curtis A. Reade, 91, longtime local farmer, who passed away Sunday, August 14, 2005. Curtis was born September 17, 1913, in Jewell, IA to Burt and Hattie Reade. He graduated from Jewell High School in 1931 where he earned All State Honors in football. He attended Drake University on a football scholarship, but the depression ended his college career. In 1933 he married Marvel Olafson of Stanhope, IA and started his long and successful working career on a Hamilton County, IA road crew. In 1934 their first son, Curtis Jr. was born. Soon after he borrowed $1500 from his grandfather and bought a gas station in Webster City, IA. After several years of servicing large trucks outdoors in the middle of winter he made a career change and purchased a struggling mens clothing store, which he named The Hubb. He turned the business into the leading clothing store in the county during World War II. In 1941 their second, Lynn was born. With the success of their business and the need to get away from cold Midwest winters they moved to Granada Hills, CA, in the San Fernando Valley in 1948. In 1950 they purchased a ranch east of Lamont, which he owned and operated with his son, Lynn, until his death. He also pioneered the construction of numerous apartment and mobile home rentals in Lamont over the past 35 years. Aside from his family, his second love was golf. He started his golfing career as a young man in high school and continued past his 91st birthday. He was a 55 year member of Stockdale Country Club, a founder and President Emeritus of the Seniors Masters Golf held each spring in Palm Springs, a 30 year member of the International Antique Golf Club Collectors Society and had the privilege to play golf on every continent in the world and made friends while doing it. He is survived by his sons, Lynn and daughter-in- law, Genie of Bakersfield and Curtis Jr. and daughter-in-law, Loretta of Santa Maria; niece, Sharon Petersma of Newton, IA; 5 grandchildren, Scott Reade and wife, Amanda of Bakersfield, Curtis Reade III and wife, Veronika, Craig Reade and wife, Christine all of Santa Maria, Terri Bramer and husband, Brant of Fresno and Chris Reade and wife, Sue of Salinas; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marvel, in 1980 and his second wife, Barbara Mohr in 2004. Memorial donations may be made to the Kern County Junior Golf Association, P.O.
