A Rosary and Mass will be recited Wednesday, April 6, 2005, 10:00 a.m., at St. Josephs Catholic Church, 1515 Baker St., Bakersfield, CA. Our mother, Jean Eyherabide was born in Eureka, Nevada, on February 12, 1918. Her mother died in childbirth. Her father, Domingo Recatune, brought her to Bakersfield in 1921 upon his marriage to Marcelina Noriega, daughter of Basque pioneer, Faustino Noriega. Mom forever considered Marcelina to be her real mother, and she grew up as a special member of the Noriega family, affectionately known as Jeannie-bob. Mom grew up in the Noriega house on Baker Street. She attended St. Josephs Catholic School, Kern Union High School and Lufkins Business School. She went to work for her uncle, Judge Frank Noriega, and served as his court clerk for ten years. In 1946, Mom met the love of her life, Dominic Eyherabide, at the wedding of brother, Steve and Dora Eyherabide. The two married in San Francisco on June 21 1947. After a one month honeymoon touring across the Pacific Northwest, they established their home on Monterey Street. Their first three children were born while living there: Marcia (1949), Dominic (1950), and Jim (1955). While living in Monterey, Jean made many long lasting friendships. In 1959, at age 42, mom surprised everyone with the news that the baby of the family, Eugenia, was on the way. With this, the family had outgrown the Monterey home, and the family moved to the new house where mom would life for the rest of her life. Our moms life was devoted to her family and her home. During these years she enjoyed family dinners, vacations at Hermosa Beach, Basque picnics, especially the July 4th picnics at Fort Tejon, and family road trips. She took great pride in being an ideal homemaker in the old fashioned sense of the term. She loved to cook, spoil her kids (and grandkids), and was totally devoted to her husband. And the days she became a Nana, were her proudest days. Mom also had a very special relationship with her sister, Louise. Their special bond grew through Mom taking Louise (and other cousins) to the movies, summers at the sheep camp in Mono Lake (washing dishes), family vacations and holidays with Louise and her daughters, Lisa and Marcie, and their hourly phone conversations each evening (no kidding!!). Mom and Dad enjoyed travel to Mexico, Alaska and Europe. After Dads passing in 1988, Mom continued family trips to Hawaii, Washington D.C., New York and other East Coast cities. Mom lived an active and healthy life until Alzheimers slowed her down in the last three years. She passed away peacefully in her home. Jean was a member of the Kern County Bo-Beeps, an honorary member of the Kern County Basque Club, St. Josephs Altar Society, and the Saint Margaret Mary Young Ladies Institute for 70 years. Mom was preceded in death by her loving husband of 41 years, and her brother, Don Recatune. She is survived by her daughter, Marcia; her son, Dominic and wife, Barbara; son, Jim and wife, Cyndi; daughter, Eugenia and husband, John Kirby; and grandchildren, Bianca, Nicolette and Marc; Jennifer and husband, Ryan Smith, Mary Alice and Jim; Dominic and Sarah Kirby; her beloved sister, Louise Smiddy; sister-in-law, Juanita Eyherabide and many cousins, nieces and nephews. We want to give special thanks to Roseanne Sanchez, who took special care of our mother the last year of her life. We also want to thank Angie Alvarez, Elise Mendiburu, Dorothy Cantu and Hoffmann Hospice. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Jim, Marc, and Dominic, family friend, John Carter, nephew, Steve Eyherabide, and cousins, Michael Noriega and Ed Noriega. Honorary Pallbearers will be Raymond Eyherabide Jr., Ryan Smith, Bruce Noriega, Stephen Eyherabide, Bud Fraser, Paul Summers, Robert Gomez and Richard Fanucchi. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Hoffmann Hospice, or by remembering our Mom by spending special time with your loved ones. Mom, we love you, you were a wonderful elegant woman. Hopson-Anspach Family Mortuary Additional Comments: Volunteer submission - No relation to deceased.
