"Dusty" 1913 - 2005 Charles C. Rhoads (Dusty) 1913 - 2005 Charles "Dusty" Rhoads was born August 25, 1913 in Burlington, Kansas. He passed away on July 8, 2005, in Wofford Heights at the age of 91 where he spent his last years in a retirement home. Dusty was raised in Burlington with two brothers and three sisters. He attended all eight years of his early education in a one room schoolhouse. After High School he moved to Emporia, Kansas where he earned a degree in teaching. He then taught for five years in Kansas before joining the Navy in 1942. It was in San Diego where he was stationed that he met his future bride Ruth, who was also serving in the Navy as a Nurse. They married in San Diego on April 12, 1944. Dusty was released from the Navy in 1945 and he then went on to UCLA to complete his California Teaching Credential. The next year they moved to Kern Homes in Shafter where he began a teaching and coaching job at Shafter High School. He taught and coached athletics for seven years in Shafter before moving to Bakersfield in 1953 for the opening of North High School where he was a Counselor and Athletic Director. He was well loved by many at North High. Dusty retired in 1978 after a very successful career of shaping young lives. After retirement he and Mom spent much of their time traveling all over the United States in their Motor Home. They also traveled many times to various locations in Europe, Canada, Mexico, New Zealand, Australia, Hawaii and Alaska. Dad also enjoyed playing golf and working in his yard and completed many projects around the house. Dusty had a life long interest in sports and up until the time of his death he could tell you who won which game, the score and where they stood in the playoffs.
