She was born July 6, 1917 in Los Angeles, California. She was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Florence Robertson, and her husbands, William N. Hiatt of Arroyo Grande, California, Richard Rowland of Bakersfield, and C. Lin Sault of Bakersfield. She lived near the Hollywood district during the Golden Age of Hollywood. She attended the University of California in Los Angeles. In 1938 she and her sorority took a trip to Europe on the Ile de France. In 1940 she married William N. Bill Hiatt and had one son, Howard and a daughter, Elizabeth. Bill Hiatt was a petroleum engineer with Superior Oil Company. In 1946 the family was transferred to Bakersfield. In 1947 Dottie founded the City Hostess Service, a greeting service for newcomers to Bakersfield. In subsequent years, her business extended to other areas of Kern County and the Central Coast. Her business also expanded to advertising publications and bridal shows. She founded the Newcomers Club of Bakersfield and has been a member of the Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce, the Downtown Business Association and the Executive Association of Kern County. Dottie has become an icon of Bakersfield. In 1993, Mayor Bob Price declared June 14th Dottie Hiatt Day. Her warmth and radiance brought a sense of prosperity and good feeling to the businesses and residents of Bakersfield. Dottie traveled extensively in the 1960s, 70s and 80s. She has been almost everywhere in the world except Antarctica. She is survived by a son, Howard Hiatt and his wife, Lamar Estelle; and a daughter, Elizabeth Salas and her husband, Larry; 2 grandchildren, Joshua LePell and Renee Preston; and 4 great- grandchildren. A Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday, May 18, 2005, from 2:00 5:00 p.m., at the City Hostess House on the corner of 18th & V St. Additional Comments: Volunteer submission - No relation to deceased.
