Schmidt Mar. 30, 1915 - Dec. 28, 2005 Services: Fri., Dec. 30, 3:00 p.m. Services will be held in Greenlawn Southwest Chapel, 2739 Panama Lane, Friday, today, December 30th at 3:00 p.m. for Marie Schmidt, 90, of Bakersfield, who passed away December 28, 2005 at her home. Msgr. Ronald Swett will officiate and interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, New York, on January 3rd, next to her husband, and not far away from Celia Cruz, the Queen of Salsa. Marie E. Schmidt, nee' Maria Esther Morazzani Batista, was born on March 30, 1915 in San Juan, Puerto Rico to Esther Batista Loret de Mola and Pedro Mateo Morazzani Bosch. She attended Goico Elementary School, Guyama High School and Central High School. In 1934, after graduating from high school, she pursued secretarial studies, then housed at the University of Puerto Rico- Rio Piedras, for three years. After completing secretarial school, she became a U.S. Civil Servant under FDR's Puerto Rican Reconstruction Movement and began her first job at Fort Buchanan, the U. S. Army Base in San Juan. Marie met the love of her life, Joseph W. Schmidt, from New York City, while working at Fort Buchanan. After being engaged for several years during wartime, they married on March 6, 1945. Her husband was transferred to an army base in Curacao and six months later to Petersburg, Virginia. Marie joined him at Ft. Lee, after being transferred there six months later to continue working for the U. S. Army. After her husband received an honorable discharge from the service, they moved to New York City. Marie was then transferred to work for the Veterans' Administration Hospital in the Bronx, New York, while her husband worked for The New York Sun in the advertising department. After her husband acquired two advertising agencies, Greshoff Advertising Agency and Advertising Bureau of America, Marie worked for the businesses as a bilingual secretary and receptionist after her children began school. Marie enjoyed her employment and later worked for U.S. Oil in New York City. She retired in 1977. Marie was preceded in death by her husband in 2001, after 55 years of marriage. She was also preceded in death by her parents and all of her siblings, Esther Rafaella, Jorge, Melba, and Pedro, except for her beloved sister, Margie Morazzani. She is survived by her three children, Noreen Brau, Joanne Schmidt, and Joseph W. Schmidt Jr.; four grandchildren, Ingrid Girod, Evan Brau, Joseph Schmidt, and Heather Schmidt; four grandchildren, Julian Girod, and Isabel Girod, Jameson Brau, and Peyton Brau; her nieces, Elaine Waddell, Lisa Waddell and Terry Domanick; daughter-in-law, Valerie Schmidt; son-in-law, Salvador Brau; daughter's partner, Reide Garnett; nephews, Pedro Luis Morazzani Ferrer and Jorge Morazzani Ferrer; and many other nieces and nephews. Marie was a kind, generous, very sociable, determined, and witty woman. She loved children and was a devoted and caring mother and grandmother throughout her lifetime. She was an excellent dancer and she loved a wide variety of music. She had a passionate love for life and was an optimist. She resided in Bakersfield since 2001, after her husband passed away, to be near her daughter, Dr. Joanne Schmidt. Marie always liked visiting Bakersfield before she resided here. She lived at Glenwood Gardens since May 2001. The family would like to thank Glenwood Gardens for the excellent care she received there, especially from the care givers who were often bilingual and able to communicate with her in Spanish as well as English. The family requests that donations be made in Marie's memory to the Alzheimer's Association.
