Shelton June 29, 1902 - Dec. 26, 2005 Funeral services will be on Friday, December 30, 2005, 1:00 p.m., at Hillcrest Memorial Chapel. Dorothy was born on June 29, 1902 in Salem, Missouri and move to Bakersfield with her husband and two sons in 1935. She was preceded in death by her husband Elmer R. Shelton. Survivors are sons, Ken Shelton and wife, Zelda and Robert C. Shelton; 7 grandchildren, 15 great- grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. During Dorothys 103 years, she witnessed many exciting events, riding in the first automobile in her neighborhood, traveling in most of the 50 states, several trips to Europe, plus hair-raising rides in a side-car attached to Elmer's motorcycle. Until her recent illness, Dorothy had been blessed with good health and was an active 103 year old. Following Elmers death in 1970, she sold the family home on South Chester Avenue and moved to Columbus Estates, a retirement facility in East Bakersfield. At Columbus Estates she organized a local chapter of the national organization- Grandmothers Club. This chapter raised funds for a variety of causes, the Bakersfield Club was nationally recognized for raising more funds than any other club in the system, Dorothy was commended for her leadership. During this time she was also active in Bakersfield Womens Club, Evergreen Garden Club and Eastern Star. Later, to be closer to her family, she moved to the independent living section of Glenwood Gardens on Calloway Drive, where she became a legend among the senior citizens. With her bridge playing skills, she was in constant demand for a game. An expert seamstress, she did clothing alterations and repairs for her neighbors.
