A graveside service will be held at Hillcrest Memorial Park on Friday, December 30th, at 1:00 p.m. Red is survived by a son, Bill (Jo) Shepherd; a grandson, Brian (Mandy) Shepherd; great- grandchildren, Aidan and Kael; a grandson, Aaron Shepherd and a granddaughter, Heather (Tim) Martin; great-grandchildren, Caleb, Shantee, Joshua and Chelsea who all reside in Great Falls, MT; a brother, John Shepherd in Bloomfield, Iowa. Red married Irene Milton in 1940, had one child (Bill) and was divorced. He then married Darlene Stark in 1943, had one child (Steve) and was divorced in 1988. A son, Steve Shepherd; three brothers, Claude, Oscar, Finley and four sisters, Clara, Beulah, Dora and Alice, preceded him in death. Red was born to William and Nellie Shepherd on August 27, 1913, in Drakesville, Iowa and came to Bakersfield in 1936. He farmed in the lake bottom south of Bakersfield for the Frick Brothers until 1945. He then managed the Los Angeles Athletic Club (Maple Ranch) until 1985. Red remained at the Maple Ranch as an advisor until he retired in 1995 after 50 years of service. Red was active in the Foot Printers Association, Boy Scouts of America, Fish and Game Association and the Moose Lodge. He was a Trustee on the Lakeside Elementary School Board; served in the CCCs during WWII, and served on the Kern County Grand Jury. As BBQ King of Kern County he cooked for community-wide organizations such as the Fish and Game, Shriners, schools, churches and other charitable agencies. Red was famous for his deep-pit barbecue seasoning and was the founder of Shepherds Seasoning and Shepherds Food Products. Red had a special place in his heart for children, especially his grand and great-grandchildren. He was always ready to tell or listen to a good joke and enjoyed being with his many friends.
