Sherman Services: Tues., Oct 4, 11:00 a.m. Born April 15, 1923, in Norfolk, Nebraska, Charles J. Sherman passed away on September 27, 2005, in Bakersfield, California. Charles was a member of the VFW of Porterville, the Porterville Elks Lodge, Mayflower Association in Fresno, CA, Ancient Artillery in Boston, MA, Sons of the American Revolution, and a member of the MacNicol Clan (Scots in America). Charles was a World War II Veteran having served in Europe with Pattons Third Army as an Infantryman and earned the Combat Infantry Badge, a Bronze Star, two Purple Hearts and three Battle Stars. As many may recall the Third Army raced across France and was at the German border when it was diverted to the Battle of the Bulge. After the Battle of the Bulge the Third Army went into Germany and onto Austria and Czechoslovakia. In spite of resistance that was very heavy at times, the Third Army took more ground, captured or killed more enemy with fewer casualties than any comparable Army in history. After the war Charles received his Bachelors Degree in Business from Boston University. He later moved to California in the early 50s and worked and retired from the Los Angeles Probation Department. He is survived by wife, Margaret J. Sherman of Bakersfield, CA; daughter, Charlene Cole of Wakefield, MA; grandson, Jeff Cole, his wife, Margaret and great-grandsons, Alex and Eddie of Manchester, NH; sisters, Helen Brigida of Plantation, FL and Ailene Marshall of Whitman, MA; and many loving nephews, nieces and friends. Special Thank You to Bobbi Lozano, Sheryle Kimes and Odyssey Hospice, especially nurse attendant, Vicky and nurse, Judy.
