Gordon was born on April 14, 1920 in Santa Monica, CA to Gordon and Harriet Slater. He grew up in Bakersfield, Lebec and Taft, graduating from Taft High School in 1938. He earned an A.A. degree from Bakersfield Junior College. A highly decorated Army Air Corps fighter pilot during WWII, Gordon flew 340 combat hours on 185 fighter missions in North Africa, Europe and China. He was on Iwo Jima preparing fighter squadrons for the invasion of Japan when the war ended. He discharged from the 33rd fighter group of the 14th Air Force, as a Major, in April of 1946. After the war he worked for the U.S. Forest Service, Standard Oil Co., and ultimately owned and operated Dans Trailer Lodge in Bakersfield. Gordon moved to Nampa, Idaho 13 years ago for his Last Great Adventure. He loved his new home state, bow hunting deer, shooting ducks and catching fish. Hunting, fishing and flying were lifelong passions. He flew a 1947 Navion for many years and was sad to give it up a few years ago. He always grew a big garden, and canned and froze his harvest. He played the piano and organ, and loved the 40s big band music. Gordon was preceded in death by his first wife, Maxine, in 1967. He married Margaret in 1969 and she survives him, continuing to reside in Nampa. Other survivors include his sister, Patricia Slater Barret; sons, Dennis Slater (Valerie) and Robert Slater (Trudy); daughter, Susan Pudiwitr (Don), all of Bakersfield. Sons, Ted Avery (Diana) of Meridian, ID and John Avery of Santa Barbara. There are numerous grandchildren and many wonderful and caring friends. A memorial service will be held on Monday, December 19, 2005, at 1:30 p.m., at Greenlawn Mortuary, 3700 River Blvd., where his ashes will be inurned.
