Cooley Jr. Chapel for Lance Richard Smith, 45. Services are Saturday, January 7, 2006, 11:00 a.m., at Holy Temple Church of God in Christ, 1001 E. Planz Rd. Rev. Reginald L. Thomas officiating. Interment to follow in Union Cemetery. Lance Richard Smith was born March 6, 1960, in Bakersfield, California, to the union of Robert and Evelyn Tucker-Smith, the youngest of 15 children. As the family had just recently moved from Oklahoma, to Bakersfield, Lance was the only child in the family born in California, and was affectionately referred to by his father as that little Desert Rat. He accepted Christ at an early age, and was a member of Orthodox Church of God in Christ, where he was baptized in 1967, under the pastorate of the late T.W. Russaw. He attended Fremont Elementary and Compton Junior High Schools. He graduated from Foothill High School, in 1978, and attended Bakersfield Junior college for one year. Lances favorite hobbies included yard work, bicycling, and tending his fish aquarium. Following graduation from high school, he worked for the Bakersfield City School District for 10 years, as well as for Councilman Vernon and Nancy Strong for many years. At the time of his death, Lance was employed by TeCate Market. Lance, who lived in Bakersfield all 45 years of his life, was a quiet, gentle soul, which gained him many kind and devoted friends. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. He departed this life peacefully in his sleep on December 29, 2005. Lance was preceded in death by his parents; his oldest brother, Robert Lee Smith; and his oldest sister, Ruth Ann Smith- Hadley. Lance leaves to cherish his memory one daughter, Zukia Keshawn Monay Smith of Fresno, CA; one grandson, Kaylon Jonté Mason of Fresno, CA; seven brothers, Joseph Earl Smith of Compton, CA; Willie D. Smith and Everett Eugene Smith of Santa Monica, CA; James Henry Smith, Gary Wayne Smith, and Gregory Dale Smith of Bakersfield, CA; and Johnnie Ray Smith of Oxnard, CA; five sisters, Etta May Bruner of Rialto, CA; Faye E. Leggins of Los Angeles, CA; Margie E. Parrish and Kathryn June Huggins of Bakersfield, CA; and Sandra Juanita Thomas of Fresno, CA; two uncles, Charles Tucker of Wichita, Kansas, and Nathaniel Smith of Los Angeles, CA; three aunts, Ola Mae Miller and Essie Maxine Smallwood of Bakersfield, CA; and Alveda Gregory of Richmond, CA; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
