Winnie was the second oldest of six children. She grew up in Oildale and used to love telling stories about the old days. Crawdad fishing, burlap dresses and toys made of string and sticks. She graduated from North High School in 1959. In 1961 she married her husband, Ed and 16 months later in 1962 they had their son, Lee. Seventeen years later by surprise they had their daughter, Sarah and the family was complete. Winnie spent her child rearing years working full-time off and on and being the best wife and mother anyone could ask for. In 2004 she was blessed with her first grandchild. She considered it to be her new job to love and spoil her accordingly so she did. Winnie was a kind and generous person with a heart full of love. Always quick to lend a hand. She always had a smile, even when times were hard. She will be missed by all who knew her. She is preceded in death by her parents, Yeaman and Ruth Smith; brother, Ernie Smith and sister, Marilyn Hurst. She is survived by her husband, Ed McAlister; son, Lee McAlister; daughter and son-in-law, Sarah and Mike Peckham; granddaughter, Ashelynn Peckham; brother, David and wife, Linda Smith, all of Bakersfield; brother, Gary and wife, Connie Smith of Wasilla, AK; brother, Kenny and wife, Tana of NV; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, her aunt, Tilly Creech, and her friends.
