He and his twin brother, John, were born to Thurston and Nancy Stidham in Doty, WA on May 5, 1925. Raised in Mossy Rock, WA, he worked as a lumberjack for a short time before joining the U.S. Coast Guard. During WWII he served as a sonar man onboard a USCG Subchaser. After leaving the service he began his college education at Central Washington University. He was very grateful for the GI bill, which allowed him to further his education and meet his beloved wife, Betty, whom he married in 1951. After earning a Masters Degree, Jim embarked on a teaching career. He and Betty moved to Kern County in 1954. He taught in Arvin for two years, after which he accepted a position at East Bakersfield High School, where he taught Art classes for the next 26 years. He served as Art Department Chairman from 1957 to 1976 and retired in 1982. Time off from teaching was spent at their homes on Washingtons Puget Sound, and in Panorama Heights entertaining family and friends. Some of his favorite activities included fishing, boating, and bonfires on the beach. Jim, his friends and brothers, famously known as The Deacons, packed in and fished on the Elwah River every year for over a decade. In later years he enjoyed family gatherings, at which he proudly displayed his newly developed culinary skills. He was known for his unique talent in baking a wide variety of fresh breads. Jim was hailed as the BBQ master and also made a fantastic potato salad. Jim is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty and his brothers, Thurston and Howard and sister Louise. He is survived by son, Howard and daughter-in-law, Meg; sons, Wesley and Jim Jr.; granddaughters, Madison, Paisley, Phelan and Hanna; brother, John and many nieces, nephews and friends. A graveside service is planned for 1:00 p.m., September 23, at the Hillcrest Memorial Park Hill of Valor. Legacy.com Published in the Bakersfield Californian on 9/21/2005.
