Joan Parker was born May 22, 1951, in Sacramento, the daughter of Robert and Eleanor Scarbrough. She attended Cordova High School and graduated with the Class of 1969. She went on to attend college at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo receiving her Bachelor of Science Degree. Following that, she received her teaching credentials and completed her student teaching at Pomona. Joan moved to Wasco and began her 31- year career teaching English at Wasco Union High School, the last seven years with Independence High School. She married Jim Parker on June 9, 1991. Joan jogged everyday and loved to exercise, her favorite was high impact aerobics. She also golfed and received her certification in scuba diving. She was baptized in the American Baptist Church in Sacramento and was a member of California Teachers Association. She was very self-confident, assertive, friendly and volunteered her free time to many of the high school activities. She was a devoted teacher and cared for her students. Joan is survived by her husband, Jim Parker of Wasco; mother, Eleanor Scarbrough of Bakersfield; brother, Lieutenant Colonel Robert Scarbrough and wife, Linda of Tehachapi; Jims children, Julie Craig and husband, Mike of Kingsburg and their daughters, Amber and Brenna; Scott Parker of Clovis and his son, Benjamin. Her father, Robert L. Scarbrough who passed away March 11, 2001 and special cousin, Susan Rolin, preceded her in death. The family would like to thank the teachers of Wasco High School who generously donated a years worth of sick leave to Joan during her long illness. She was overwhelmed by their caring support of her. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to Wasco Scholarship Association, P.O. Box 7, Wasco, Ca 93280.
