Unfortunately, cancer won that battle. Leslie died July 1, 2005. She was, as depicted in Delacroixs painting of the spirit of France, carrying the pennant into battle against ignorance and apathy, and for better education and the rights of children and teachers. She fought cancer also with that same determination and spirit. Leslie was born July 17, 1954, in Newport Beach to Patricia, now of Bakersfield and Ronald of Costa Mesa. She is also survived by her brother, Marc, his wife Cathy, and their son, Marc, Jr. of Garden Grove. Graduating from Costa Mesas Estancia High School, she attended the University of Utah, graduating from San Diego State College, and earning a Masters Degree from California State University, Fullerton. Her education aimed at work as a Speech Pathologist for pre-school children with severe disabilities of speech and language, a profession for which she had earned numerous additional certificates and credentials. Her work in Bakersfield was primarily at Richardson Child Development Center. She was a member of Alpha Chi Omega, Bakersfield Junior League, and served as President of the Kern County Educators Association branch of CTA, fighting for the rights of children and teachers. Her bright, intelligent, smiling, generous personality will be profoundly missed by all who knew her and loved her. A Memorial Service and Birthday Party will be held Sunday, July 17th, 3:00 p.m., at St. Francis Catholic Church, Bakersfield. In lieu of flowers, she requested memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society. Doughty-Calhoun-OMeara Funeral Directors Legacy.com Published in the Bakersfield Californian on 7/10/2005.
