Joan was at home with her husband, children, best friend and grandson. Joan lived life with zest and joy from parasailing to riding down the Grand Canyon on a mule, she lived life to the fullest. She was a soccer player and later a referee for AYSO and Club soccer. Joan loved her hobbies including biking, archery, baking, sewing and traveling. To say the least she was a daredevil, she would try anything once and usually tried to get someone to do it with her. Her charisma and charm brought her many good and wonderful friends and she was a good friend in return. During her illness she would call to make sure everyone was OK and provided much counseling on faith and courage to everyone around her. Joan touched many peoples lives and her legacy will be that she was strong beyond belief and was unwilling to let cancer affect her joy of life and positive outlook. Joan was born and raised in Hays, Kansas. She dated her future husband, Tom, from junior high throughout high school and they married in October of 1969. Joan held a supervisory position with Baxter Travenol in Hays, until moving to Bakersfield in 1979. She worked for Tenneco Farming, Freymiller Trucking Inc., and Innovative Computing over the next 25 years. The last several years were spent as a computer consultant for Innovative Computing, traveling to almost every state in the U.S. She loved teaching people to run the software and getting to meet all the different people. Her beautiful smile and easy way with people made her great at what she did. She became good friends with many people she trained. Even as her illness confined her to her home she never lost that smile and twinkle in her eye. To the very end she was ready for the next challenge and adventure. Joan is survived by her loving husband, Tom Black; her daughter, Vanessa; and her son, Dan; her brothers, Paul and Dennis Schukman and her adoring grandson, Keyon Turne; her mother, Lillian Schukman; her father, Charles Schukman and her sister, Diana preceded Joan in death.
