Sears Gibbins June 13, 1954 - May 6, 2005 *(including husband Melvin ONeil Gibbins: Dec. 4, 1947 - Apr. 29, 2005 at bottom of this obit) Elaine passed away after a short battle with cancer at the age of 50. Interment will take place at Hillcrest Cemetery, on Wednesday, May 11, at 1:00 p.m., followed by a celebration of life service at the First United Methodist Church, 4600 Stockdale Highway, at 3:00 p.m. Elaine, the daughter of Toby and Eunice Sears, was born June 13, 1954, in Bakersfield. Elaine graduated from West High School in 1972, Bakersfield College in 1974, and California State University Sacramento in 1976 with a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration. Elaine was a Certified Public Accountant. She began her career as a CPA in 1976 with Fox and Company. In 1987, she began working for HPS Mechanical where she was part of an eight fold increase in both sales and employees. As Controller, she was responsible to have a system in place for others to perform in, rather than doing all of the work herself. On November 28, 1981, Elaine married Melvin O. Gibbins. They have one daughter Allison Lee Gibbins. Elaine was preceded in death by her father, Toby Sears, 2003, and devoted husband, Mel, who died April 29, 2005. In addition to Allison, Elaine is survived by her mother, Eunice Sears of Bakersfield; her sister, brother-in-law, and niece, Betty, Tom, and Emily Miller of Ridgecrest; her stepdaughters, Sara Burns and husband, Jeremiah of Billings, Montana, and Jennier Novin of Bakersfield; special friend, Dorotha Pilcher and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. The highlight of Elaines life was her daughter, Allison. She was her most loyal and greatest fan, cheering her on at all the softball games and tournaments from Bobbie Sox to high school league championships at Garces. Elaine was loved by all who knew her and we will miss her sweet smile. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Allison Gibbins Educational Trust Fund; the UCSF Comprehensive Cancer Center, Pancreatic Research Fund, P.O. Box 0248, San Francisco, CA 94143-0248; Hoffmann Hospice; or your charity of choice. The family expresses their appreciation to Hoffmann Hospice, nurse Kathleen, caregivers: Sharon, Rosie and Janice; and to the many people who supported us with prayers and thoughts through this difficult time. Melvin "Mel" ONeil Gibbins Dec. 4, 1947 - Apr. 29, 2005 Melvin Gibbins, age 57, of Bakersfield passed away on April 29, 2005. Interment will take place at Hillcrest Cemetery on Wednesday, May 11, at 1:00 p.m., followed by a celebration of life service at First United Methodist Church, 4600 Stockdale Highway, at 3:00 p.m. Mel was born December 4, 1947, in Van Nuys, CA, the son of Harley and Vera Gibbins. Mel graduated from South High School in 1966. Attended one year at Bakersfield College before enlisting into the Air Force Academy. Mel served one year in Vietnam then went on to receive a Business Administration degree from the academy. November 28, 1981, Mel married Elaine Dorrill Sears. They have one daughter, Allison Lee Gibbins and Mel has two other daughters, Jennifer Novin and Sara (Jeremiah) Burns. Also survived by two sisters, Claudia (Thomas) Aquilina and Chris (David) Bryan; 3 grandsons, Tyler, Stephan and Kobe, 10 nieces and nephews, and 7 grand-nieces and nephews. Mel is preceded in death by his father, mother and grandparents. Mel worked for the County since 1988 and the Health Department since 1994. Mels passion besides his wife was going and supporting his youngest daughter, Allison, throughout her softball career, whether it was at Garces or the Bakersfield Babes.
