A graveside service will be held Tuesday, May 17, 2:00 p.m. in Union Cemetery. Teru Kurotsu Sekine was born on December 25, 1927, in the city of Fukushima, Japan, to Joshichi and Shin Kurotsu. Momma-san passed away on Mothers Day, May 8, 2005. Momma-san married Sakaye Sekine at the American Consulate General, Yokohama, Japan, on February 26, 1959. They boarded the steamship President Wilson March 4 and arrived in Honolulu, Hawaii, April 17, 1959, then steamed to San Francisco and finally settled in Bakersfield, CA. Momma-san gave birth to one son, Roy Tatsuo Sekine, on February 26, 1960. Prior to our trip to Maui, Momma-san became an American citizen on October 21, 1996. She was very proud becoming an American citizen, singing the national anthem during ball games, and saving the little American flags I would bring back from political events. She even clipped American flags out of the paper and hung them up in her house. Momma-san was a lifelong housewife, but also worked several years as a seamstress for a local company called Cycle Tote, which created blouses for Teddi of California. Momma-san then spent the remaining years of her life as one of the best nurses in the world, taking care of my 92-year-old father at home. She was a member of the local Buddhist Church. Momma-san loved gardening, cooking and the Dodgers. Many flowers are still blooming in her garden. I brought lots of them to the hospital. We spent time watching the Food Network and her favorite shows, Rachael Rae and the Iron Chef. She made great eggplant dishes! On her final day Mothers Day we spent time watching her beloved Dodgers win a game. Before she passed, the nurse said my mom was looking at the red roses that I brought to her, before she left to be with Papa-san. Momma-san is preceded in death by her husband, Sakaye Sekine and brothers, Haruo Kurotsu and Toshio Kurotsu. Survivors are her son, Roy Tatsuo Sekine; sister, Yoneko Yaginuma of Japan; and nephew, Shoichi Kurotsu of Japan. I appreciate the Doctors and Nurses for all their hard work at Mercy Hospital who cared for my mother during her two-month stay. Mamma-san, I will always love you!
