She was born in Yakima, WA, on August 29, 1922, to the late Lisle and Hazel Sheeley. She married William Rutherford on March 31, 1942, in San Francisco, CA. They had 3 children; Bill, Marsha, and Linda. Mom was very active in PTA, YWCA, Elks Lodge, and church activities during these years and she was known for her culinary talents. The family lived in Santa Rosa, Napa, and Watsonville, CA, while the children were growing up. Mom opened a successful business, selling used clothing and jewelry in Santa Cruz, CA, after the children grew up. Mom and Dad moved to St. George, UT, in 1982, when they retired. They moved to Bakersfield, CA, in 1993. Betty was a member of Northminster Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed her friends, family, and traveling; her favorite hobby was baking. She entered the Kern County Fair each year and won many awards for her pies, cakes, and canned goods. Betty is survived by her daughters, Marsha Allen and husband, Sam; Linda Nicol and husband, Gerry; daughter-in-law, Pam Rutherford; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, William E. Rutherford, in 1995, and by her son, William E. Rutherford, Jr., in 1992. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 9, 2005, at 2 p.m. at Northminster Presbyterian Church, 3700 Union Ave., Bakersfield, CA. We would especially like to thank Hoffman Hospice and Valley Convalescent for the loving care and kindness they provided to Mom and her family.
