She was born to Charlotte and Fred Shelton in Seattle, WA, on September 11, 1929. Raised in Washington, she attended Central Washington University where she met her beloved husband, James. They were married in 1951 and after teaching and supporting Jim through graduate school for three years, they moved to Kern County in 1954. During her 30-year teaching career, 25 years of which she spent at General Shafter School, Betty taught more than 800 children how to read. She was a patient and loving teacher who enjoyed sharing the wonders of the world with her students as well as her own children and grandchildren. Betty was a proud and active member of Alpha Delta Kappa, an international honorary sorority for women educators. Time off from teaching was spent at their homes on Washingtons Puget Sound and in Panorama Heights entertaining the family and dear friends. Fishing, boating, and bonfires on the beach were some of the favorite activities she shared. Betty is survived by her devoted husband, Jim; son, Howard and daughter-in-law, Meg; sons, Wesley and Jim Jr.; granddaughters, Madison, Paisley, Phelan and Hanna; brother, Fred and sisters, Marge and Jean, and many nieces, nephews and friends. A graveside service will be held Friday, May 20, 2005, 10:00 a.m., at Hillcrest Memorial Park. Legacy.com Published in the Bakersfield Californian on 5/18/2005.
