Stiles Hopkins 11/25/1919 - 6/8/2005 Marge Stiles Hopkins, a longtime Bakersfield resident, died June 8, 2005. Marge was born November 25, 1919, in Holbrook, Arizona. Her parents were Henry G. Stiles and Florence L. Dowell. Her family moved to Bakersfield when she was a young girl. Marge attended Jefferson Elementary, Washington Junior High, and graduated from Bakersfield High School in 1936. She recently attended her 68th high school class reunion this spring. Marge went to Bakersfield College and then on to the University of California at Berkeley where she majored in English. She left college before graduating to care for her parents. Because of the shortage of workers during World War II, Marge got a job at the Weather Bureau where she trained to be a meteorologist and learned to do weather observations. In 1954 she started working for the Kern High School District. Marge was the weather reporter on KERO Channel 23 from 1955 until 1974. Marge was an avid reader and collector of books. She loved animals and had an extensive knowledge of Kern County history. After her retirement from KHSD, she worked as a volunteer at the Kern County Museum and for the Friends of the Library. She was predeceased by her husband, Harry A. Hopkins in 1972; brothers, Earl G. Stiles and Harry J. Stiles; and stepdaughter, Lucille D. Bordagaray. She is survived by stepson, Harry A. Hopkins III and daughter-in- law, Patty of Coupeville, WA; stepgrandchildren, Michele B. Williams, Catherine B. Waldon, John R. Bordagaray, Dena L. Myers, and Diana K. Patrick; and 9 great-grandchildren. A private burial will be held later at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Los Angeles. Donations can be made in Marges name to Kern County Friends of the Library, 701 Truxtun Avenue, Bakersfield, CA, or to your favorite charity.
