The family moved to Bakersfield in early 1920 where they lived in a house at 2412 San Emidio Street. Ray went to Wm Penn, Emerson and Kern County Union High School, graduating in 1936. He also attended Bakersfield Junior College. Ray began working for the Bakersfield Californian as a paper boy in 1934. He was promoted into the mail room, then the advertising department where he worked until going into the service in June 1942. He was stationed in Salt Lake at Fort Douglas and in January 1943, he went to Officers School in Starkville, Mississippi for the Transportation Corps. Upon graduation as a 2nd Lieutenant, he and Barbara Bradfield were married the same day, March 31, 1943. Barbara and Ray were together for six months in Charleston, S.C. where he graduated from amphibious school and then went to Vancouver, WA, then San Francisco and on September 30, 1943, Ray left for service in the South Pacific. He was on Guadalcanal and he participated in the assault landing on Peleliu attached to the First Marine Division. On April 1, 1945, he landed with the First Division in Okinawa. Ray had been promoted to Captain. In January, 1945, Ray returned to work at the Bakersfield Californian Newspaper as a District Manager delivering papers in southwest Bakersfield. In 1972 the Californian converted from adult delivery to carrier boys and girls. He retired June 18, 1981. Ray then began working part-time for his brother, Ben, at Stinson Stationers on Baker Street. Ray was a member of Elks 226, a lifetime member of VFW Post 7216, American Legion 26, 20-30 Club and the First Baptist Church. Ray was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara; his parents; sister, Elva Mae Campbell; brothers, Ben, Bob and Chuck; and granddaughter, Lorie Stinson. Ray is survived by his daughter, Patti Bulkeley and sons, John A. and David Stinson; granddaughters, Amanda Houston, Aubrey Stubblefield, Jaime Bulkeley; grandsons, Kevin Stinson, David Stinson II, Dustin Stinson and Kevin Bulkeley; sister-in-law, Perri Stinson and many other relatives and faithful friends. Ray was able to live in his own home until his death because of the loving care of his son, David, Raynessa Robinson, Susan Foss, Hoffmann Hospice and other family members. Pallbearers will be Ben Stinson, Russ Haley, Ron Bulkeley, David Stinson II, Kevin Stinson, Jason Houston and Dustin Stinson.
