A celebration of his life will be held Monday, August 22, 2005, at 10:00 a.m., at St. Peter Restoration Community Christian Ministries, 510 E. Brundage Ln. Pastor Oscar Anthony is officiating with interment to follow at Union Cemetery. Essa Stokes, Jr. was born to the parents of Essa Sr. and Alma Stokes in Greenville, Mississippi on August 17, 1943. He accepted Christ at an early age under the pastorage of Reverend A.H. Robinson. He attended elementary and junior high school in Greenville, Mississippi. The family relocated to Bakersfield, California in 1960 where he attended and graduated from South High School. Soon after that he established a bakery shop called Royal Pastries. Stokes joined St. Peter Missionary Baptist Church in 1968 under the direction of the late Dr. Lee Anthony where he served as a deacon. In 1972, he began working for Tenneco West as a forklift driver. Stokes began attending classes at Bakersfield College where he earned his Associates of Arts degree in Business Management. Soon after that he became a supervisor over the distribution department of Tenneco West. Once the company was sold he began working for the Nestle Ice Cream Company for many years where he received many awards of recognition for job performance.
