A private graveside service will take place for family members. Joyce attended Jefferson and Williams Elementary Schools, Washington Junior High School, East Bakersfield High School, and Bakersfield College. She then continued her education at U.S.C., receiving her nurses training at Los Angeles County Hospital, and earning the B.S.N. degree in 1956. Joyce was fascinated by the miracle of the human body, and therefore spent most of her nursing career working as a surgical nurse, where she could see firsthand the amazing way the body worked. She served as the operating room nursing supervisor at both Kern General Hospital and Bakersfield Community Hospital. Joyce earned her teaching credential in the early 1970s, and taught the first operating room technicians course through the Bakersfield Adult School. She was proud that all of her students in that first class passed the national exam giving them certification! Before retiring, Joyce worked several years as a staff nurse at the Lerdo Facility. Joyce was guided in life by her faith and family: the two things she held most dear to her heart. She constantly demonstrated kindness, compassion, and strength to those she encountered during her life. Joyce adored children! She loved giving gifts to children at the Jamison Center, as part of an outreach by the Beta Chi Sorority, of which she was a longtime member. Joyce was an avid reader. She also enjoyed playing bridge and doing crossword puzzles. Above all, though, Joyce loved just spending time with her family and friends. She is survived by her loving husband of 45 years, Marvin Glenn Stone; son, Michael David Stone; brother and sister-in-law, Neil and Nancy Harris; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins. Joyces family wishes to thank the incredible people at Evergreen Healthcare in northeast Bakersfield, as well as Hoffman Hospice, for their love and support. She will be greatly missed by family and friends, but is now in Gods hands, and at peace. Legacy.com Published in the Bakersfield Californian on 9/1/2005.
