James Ledgerwood officiating. Arlo Owen Sturgeon was born in an Iowa farmhouse near Alta, Iowa Feb 8, 1931. Though this 56 farm-boy loved a good scrap, his fights were on the side of the underdog epitomizing the Good Samaritan caring for those cast aside by society. He fought the good fight throughout his 74 years right up to his death on August 15, 2005, after his final battle with open-heart surgery and subsequent complications. Arlo lettered in football and track in high school and college. He served in the US Air Force at Las Vegas and Alaska. Three months after leaving the Air Force Arlo found the love of his life, Donna and they were married on January 9, 1955. The couple just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary January 9th. Loving a challenge, Arlo immediately began an aggressive pursuit of education resulting in both a Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees in Psychology from the University of Northern Iowa. Simultaneously, he began a family of three boys Tony, Randy and Marty growing to four grandchildren and one grandchild. Arlo's life passion was for the underdog, for any unable to speak for or protect themselves. He served and taught Iowa Civil Rights for 12 Years, was a practicing Licensed Educational Psychological and Marriage Family and Child counselor, worked as a school psychologist, was Director of Special Services, Elementary Principal at West Boron and Bailey Elementary Schools.
