Eleanor Newill Osell was born on September 14, 1915, weighing fifteen pounds. She died four days after her ninetieth birthday. Debbie Stansberry, a longtime family friend, was at her side when she passed away at 8:05 on Saturday morning. Eleanor will be remembered by her family and many friends as a warm, outgoing, and straightforward woman who enjoyed the company of and was a loyal friend to people from all walks of life. She had boundless energy for charitable projects and the stubborn determination to see them through. She abhorred pity and condescension, among her last words were dont feel sorry for me, but embraced community and philanthropy. She performed many unannounced great and small kindnesses, rewarded only by the thanks of those she touched, the mark of a truly charitable soul, in the best sense of the word. Eleanor was born in Falls City, Nebraska and moved with her family to Los Angeles in the 1930s. She graduated from George Washington High School in 1933, and from UCLA in 1937, with a degree in Education. Eleanor married Raymond Tumblin in 1938. They lived in Los Angeles and the Bay Area before moving to Bakersfield in 1947, where she taught at both Lincoln Junior High and later, at Colonel Baker School. As a teacher in the days before school breakfast programs, she began a habit of keeping graham crackers in her classroom when she realized that many students came to school without eating first; she would also provide temporary shelter and meals in her home for children from troubled families. The Tumblins had two children, Suzanne Tumblin born in 1940 and Timothy Tumblin born in 1946. Eleanor and Raymond were instrumental in founding the Bakersfield Association for Retarded Citizens and Eleanor taught and directed BARCs first Shelter Workshop. Her work with and for BARC continued throughout her life. In 1959 Eleanor married a second time to Dr. Levin Nicholas Osell of Bakersfield. Dr. Osell had two sons, Fritz Osell and Harry Osell, from a previous marriage. Dr. Osell joined his wifes diligent involvement with BARC for the rest of his career. After their marriage, she also worked in Dr. Osells office as his main receptionist and bookkeeper for approximately twenty years. She was active in the First United Methodist Church, organizing outings and activities for elderly shut-ins, and frequently providing rides to and from church and on errands. Eleanor and Lefty enjoyed golfing, dogs, especially their many German Shepherds and travel. They particularly enjoyed going to San Diego, and also took many trips with their grandchildren, including a memorable vacation to the Grand Canyon, where she said she always felt most at peace. They remained active in retirement until Dr. Osell passed away in 1995. Eleanor continued to live in their house with her son, Tim, until his death in 2004. Shortly afterward, she moved to the Parkview Julian Convalescent Home. She will be greatly missed by her surviving children, Dr. Suzanne Tumblin (Gary) of Tucson, Arizona; Fritz Osell of Enid, Oklahoma; Harry Osell of Stockton, California; her grandchildren, Clay Gary of Tokyo, Japan; Dr. Tedra Osell of Guelph, Ontario; Daphne Osell of Atlanta, Georgia; and her great-grandchildren, Linus Osell of Guelph, Ontario; and Maya Jimenez Osell and Fiona Cox of Atlanta, Georgia.
