He left Oklahoma at the age of 25 and came to California with $20.00 (during the Dust Bowl) and said he didn't want to live his life behind a plow. Virgil was an Army Veteran of the Oklahoma National Guard. He worked for Monolith Cement, where he met Cleo, who was a nurse's aid at Keene Preventorium. They fell in love and were married shortly after, in 1939. The following year, Norbert was born. Virgil and Cleo moved from Tehachapi to Bakersfield in 1940. He worked for Mohawk Refinery making aviation fuel through World War II. After Mohawk Refinery, Virgil went to work for Marathon Oil as an Instrument Engineer and remained with them until he retired. Virgil was an avid horseman, hunter, fisherman, antique gun and knife collector, rock collector, golfer, inventor, knife maker, wood carver and if that wasn't enough, he also was a dirt bike rider. He was a tall tale story teller to his grandchildren and loved spending time with them. He and Cleo helped build a family cabin in Sequoia National Forest, along with Cleo's brothers and sisters. Many good times were shared with family and friends. Virgil and Cleo loved RV'ing in their motor home with family, attending firearm shows along the way. After Cleo's employment with Keene Preventorium, she worked for the school system. Later, Cleo would go back to school herself and obtain her nursing degree. Cleo was a natural caregiver to her family, which explains why she loved being a nurse. She loved helping wherever she could. Cleo put her family first and loved being a grandma. She was one of eight children. Cleo May Tye was born November 21, 1918 and passed away August 6, 2005. Virgil and Cleo are survived by their son, Bert and daughter-in-law, Betty; 3 grandchildren, Ronald, Rick, and LaDonna, 10 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Virgil and Cleo are now together again and with their family who preceded them. Loved ones still here will truly miss both Virgil and Cleo and send their love. Bert and Betty wish to thank all family, friends, Californian Care Center, Optimal Hospice, and Hopson-Anspach Family Mortuary for their kindness and help.
