Martha was the youngest of four children, Norman, Olive and Eugene. Martha graduated Gleeman High School in 1940. During her junior year in high school Martha met Doug Tate, who at the time was a soda jerk at a neighborhood pharmacy. They began a three year courtship and were married September 3, 1941. Martha and Doug moved to Bakersfield in 1949 where Doug began his career with the California Highway Patrol. Martha was, at this time, a mother and housewife. She occasionally demonstrated foods at local grocery stores to supplement their income. As a mother, Martha excelled, she made her daughters dresses, knitted sweaters and was a fantastic cook and hostess. Martha became a dental assistant for Dr. Melvin Cochran working at that job for fifteen years. Martha took up oil painting and became proficient at painting porcelain dolls. She became a member of the Bakersfield Womans Club where she was elected president from 1988 to 1989, and was a life-time member. Martha and Doug were avid travelers, taking two to three extended vacations a year. Upon the death of her beloved husband, Martha began her slow withdrawal from life and her health began to decline. Martha leaves behind two daughters, Diane and Debby; one granddaughter, Rachel and two great-grandchildren, Jeffrey and Jessica, along with many loving friends. At Marthas request there will be no services. We wish to thank all the staff at Magnolia Court for their devotion to Martha. We truly will miss our Mom.
