June Etta (Thouvenel) Costner was born July 20, 1927, in Huntington Beach, CA, to Garrett and Virginia Thouvenel, and went to be with the Lord on August 7, 2005, in Bakersfield, CA. In the early 30s, June and her parents moved to Bakersfield, where she attended Lowell Elementary School, Emerson Junior High, and Bakersfield High School (Kern County Union High School). At Lowell School, June met a group of girls with whom she would remain friends until the day of her passing. June often spoke glowingly of her devoted friends, and they were always a meaningful part of her life. The family well knows they mourn her loss. When June was 10 years old, she met an 11 year-old boy through some family friends. That boy, Ivan Costner, would turn out to be the love of her life. She and Ivan were married nine years later on April 25, 1946. They enjoyed over 59 years of marriage, having known each other for 68 years. Their loving relationship was an inspiration to all who truly knew them as a couple. And their love endures. June and Ivan had two sons, Larry and Ron. As a family, the Costners enjoyed many extensive vacation trips by car, visiting 46 of the States. They also went on many backpacking and canoe trips. The most important part of Junes life was her family, and in the opinion of her sons, she was the best mother in the whole world. She devoted herself to her family, and although she worked part-time from 1966 1989 for the Kern County Weights and Measures Department, she viewed her role as a homemaker to be of primary importance. In later years, after the boys were out of the house, June and Ivan RV-traveled with a special group of friends. They always held that group of friends in high regard. June and Ivan were also members of various square dance classes, round dance clubs, and ballroom dancing clubs. They enjoyed membership in Smooth Dancers and the Laf-a Lot-Dance Club. June is survived by her husband, Ivan Costner; her sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Janet Costner, and Ron and Terry Costner; her grandchildren, Michael (and Chanda) Costner, Kristi (and Brian) Davis, Jennifer Costner, Nick (and Tammy) Fidler, and Christina (and Dan) Johnson; and by her great-grandchildren, Courtney, Jordan, Taylor, Caley, Catelyn, Piercynn, and Rhyder. Nothing is sweeter than a life well lived, and June lived hers well indeed. She lives on in the memories of family and friends, and now in the arms of the Lord. We are thankful for what she has given us by her simple presence among us. We loved her, and she knew it. She loved us, and we know it.
