Following a brief career in banking, she married J. Howard Porter in 1940 and moved to a ranch in the Lamont area. In 1952 the family moved into the house in Bakersfield that had been vacated by the death of her father-in-law where she lived until her death. Howard and Mary Frances shared many happy years together raising their family, traveling extensively and running a successful family farming business until Howards death in 1986. Mary Frances always cared greatly about her community and served in various capacities in organizations that contributed to the welfare of its members, including the P.T.A., the Bakersfield Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, the Advisory Board to the Community House and the Community Advisory Committee to the Bakersfield College nursing program at its inception. Appreciation of the arts and education was paramount in her upbringing and she consequently was an enthusiastic financial supporter of the Bakersfield Symphony, the Bakersfield Art Museum, the Cal State Foundation, the Walter Stiern Library Foundation and other supportive organizations. She also enjoyed membership in a number of philanthropic social clubs as well as being active in the First Presbyterian Church for many years. Mary Frances was the consummate homemaker, spending long hours at her passions, gardening and preparing gourmet meals for her family and friends. She brightened the lives of all those she met with her quick and beautiful smile, warm personality, keen sense of humor and caring heart. She will be deeply missed by her son and daughter-in-law, Dick and Beck Porter; daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Frank Ghezzi; granddaughter, Brittany Porter; grandson, Tucker Porter; numerous nieces and nephews, and many dear friends. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, July 9, at the First Presbyterian Church, 1705 17th Street. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Bakersfield College Nursing Program, 1801 Panorama Drive, Bakersfield, CA 93305.
