Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 850 California Ave., for Sherman Leon Tyler, Jr. who passed away August 4, 2005, in Los Angeles, California. On March 20, 1916, in Hearne, Texas, Sherman Leon Tyler, Jr. was born to parents Lula Mosley and Sherman Tyler, Sr. In April of 1923, the family moved to Los Angeles, CA. During WWII, he served in the European Theater, receiving five Battle Stars and the Bronze Star; and the Good Conduct Medal, Meritorious Unit Award, and WWII Victory Medal. He was employed by the United States Postal Service, the Los Angeles City School Administrative Section, Kern County School Administrative School Section, Fresno State College, Kern General Hospital and retired from the City of Bakersfield Dept. of Public Works. While employed with the United States Postal Service as a clerk he met Harriett Page. In June of 1951, they had a beautiful daughter together, Marsha Suzanne. In 1960, Sherman moved to Bakersfield, California where he faithfully served his community. Mayor Harvey Hall presented Sherman with the key to this city as a testament to his dedication and service to many, many community organizations and boards. Sherman met and wed Dorothy Townes in September of 1965 and enjoyed forty years together. Both Sherman and Dorothy were members of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church. On April 18, 1977, Sherman was sworn in by Governor Edmund G. Brown as one of his first appointees to the reconstituted California Commission on Aging and he was elected Chairperson in 1981 and 1982. Sherman founded the Senior Legislature and convened the first state conference, traveling across the United States as a watchdog for senior citizens. He was a leader in every sense of the word, a forward thinker and advocate for better understanding among all people. He won the praise and admiration of the entire community. On August 4, 2005, God dispatched an angel from Heaven to bring home one of His roses from His garden. There He separated Sherman Tylers soul from his body that he may rest from labor here on earth. He leaves to cherish his memory: his wife, Dorothy Tyler; daughters, Marsha Suzanne and Hillary Marilyn; brother-in-law, Charles Breedlove; granddaughter, Knieba Jones-Rodgers and her husband, Philip Rodgers, Jr.; great- granddaughters, Kiara Shanelle and Maasai Elan and a host of other relatives and friends.
