Richard R. Vieyra, Sr. July 3, 1941 - January 31, 2006 Services: Fri., Feb. 3, 10:00 a.m. Visitation begins today Thursday, February 2nd, from 4-8 p.m., at Hillcrest Mortuary. A memorial service will be held Friday, February 3rd, 10:00 a.m., in the Chapel of Hillcrest Mortuary. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park & Mortuary. Richard R. Vieyra, Sr. was born on July 3, 1941, in Bakersfield, California and passed peacefully in his sleep on January 31, 2006, after a courageous battle with lung cancer. Richard was born to Delores and Manuel Vieyra and was raised in the DiGiorgio/Arvin area. He was a graduate of Arvin High School where he excelled in football, baseball and basketball. His athletic abilities led him to being a proud member of the Bakersfield College 1959 Renegade Junior Rose Bowl Championship Team. Richards passion for sports continued when he played baseball for The Bakersfield Aces and later was inducted into The Mexican American Baseball Hall of Fame. In 1969 Richard joined The California Department of Corrections. During his career he promoted numerous times and eventually retired at the rank of Lieutenant after 30 years of service. Richard truly enjoyed spending time with his family and friends; attending his grandchildrens sporting events, golfing with his buddies, hanging out at the lake and just celebrating life! Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Michelle and her husband, Alfredo Castro and their children, Taylor Allison, Cristian and Isley; his son, Richard R. Vieyra Jr. and his wife, Pam and their children, Morgan Nicole, Richard III (Ricky) and Tanner, all of Bakersfield, California. He was blessed to have loved three beautiful women, Mary Ortiz (mother of Michelle and Richard), Sharon Vieyra and Betty Abarguez-Vieyra. Also cherishing his memory, his mother, Delores; his brother, Manuel Jr. and wife, Esther; brother, Gilbert and wife, Ann; sister, Margaret Carlyon and husband, Bill; sister, Isabel Boado; sister, Anna Rubin; brother, Phillip and wife, Maggie; brother, Randy and wife, Beverly; and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. After 64 wonderful years he joins his father, Manuel Sr. and brother, Julian. Pallbearers will be Manuel Vieyra Jr., Gilbert Vieyra, Phillip Vieyra, Randy Vieyra, Robert Smokey Castro, David Villanueva, George Faz, Gabriel Galvez. Honorary Pallbearers are Frank G. Soza and Ralph Louie Soza. Richards family would like to extend their love and gratitude to all who cared and prayed for him and appreciate your kindness, compassion and friendship.
