Robert Balles Villegas was born in Colton, California, on February 24, 1926, to Regino and Clara Villegas. He was the third of eight children born to this union. His brothers, Regino, Jr. and Randolph and five sisters, Rosie, Lucy, Crusita, Delia and Nancy moved to Bakersfield in the early 1940s where he called home for many years. He attended the local schools here in Bakersfield where he and his family joined St. Francis Church and attended regularly. Robert attended East Bakersfield High School excelling in baseball and track. With a desire to see the world and to serve his country he enlisted in the United States Army at the age of seventeen, his mom had to sign so he could serve. A gallant and brave soldier, Robert served his country honorably receiving numerous accommodations: European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart. After returning from active duty overseas sometime in 1948 he met the love of his life Rosetta (Rose) Reyes in Bakersfield and they were soon married and together they raised two children, Robert (Bobbie) and Susan. Robert loved people and was a stranger to no one who knew him. A licensed Barber who entertained all his clients with his fun-loving good nature and charm, he worked and served this community for many years. In 1964 his family relocated to Oakland, California where he spent the rest of his days until his health failed him some few years ago. Robert was a jokester who would make you laugh with his antics and love of people. He loved baseball, fishing and playing his guitar and could he dance! He was quite a jitter-bug partner, so they say. After a lengthy illness and a courageous fight on April 11, 2005, Robert Balles Villegas went on to glory, passing away in Delano, CA.
