He died only a few days before his ninety-eighth birthday and his forty- eighth wedding anniversary. He is survived by his wife, Charlotte; his two sons, Bruce Jr. and David; his brother, Peter; and by two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. His peaceful Sunday night passage was attended by his wife and his granddaughter, Colleen Webb. Vogel arrived in Bakersfield in 1942 just after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He went to work for the Lockheed Aircraft Corporation building B-17 bombers here in town. At the wars close he founded Vogel Electric, a repair shop for electric motors and generators of all types. In 1956 he married his second wife, Charlotte (Lottie to her friends), a fugitive from Soviet occupied Germany. The couple became well known in square dance circles and in the Hermans Sons Lodge. In addition to his local fame as an electrical wizard consulted by many, Vogel enjoyed a high reputation for his musical talent. He played clarinet with the Bakersfield Philharmonic Orchestra during the first ten years of its rebirth at the close of World War II. After leaving the orchestra he continued to play in summer band concerts. In the 1980s he formed and led a small band which played for local dance parties and other social events. He and his band gave many charity performances at rest homes and elder hostels. For the last twenty years of his life, Mr. Vogel could be heard giving weekly performances at the Bit of Germany Restaurant on Flower Street. In his honor the restaurant will host a celebration of his life on August 14th, at 2 p.m. All who wish to remember the deceased are invited to attend.
