Ruth was born August 9, 1912, at University Place Hospital, in Lincoln, Nebraska. Her parents were Charles M. Vorhees and Lillian M. Mathews. When she was six weeks old Ruth moved to Seneca, Kansas, with her parents to the home of her grandfather. They built their home on land that was homesteaded by her grandfather after the Civil War. She attended Seneca public Schools and graduated from Seneca Public High School in 1930. She also attended Washburn University at Topeka, Kansas, receiving a Kansas State Teaching Credential. She taught school in Centralia, Morrill and Seneca, Kansas until moving to Bakersfield in 1938. She married Dorus H. Piper Jr. on June 9, 1938, in Bakersfield, where they lived their entire married life. Ruth worked most of her life. She was part owner and operator of a business college from 1940 to 1943. She also worked as a bookkeeper for Ray Mann Distributing Co. from 1950 to 1972. Afterward, she performed part-time telemarketing until the age of 84, when she officially retired. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Dorus H. Piper, Jr., who passed in 1980, brother, Charles Vorhees Jr. and sister, Elizabeth (Vorhees) Wempe. Ruth is survived by a brother, Samuel Vorhees and a sister, Carol (Vorhees) Diffey of Bakersfield. Ruth is also survived by her three children and their respective spouses, Jerry L. and Sone Piper of Bakersfield, Mary Jane (Piper) and Jerry J. Hodges of Olathe, Kansas, Robert E. and Terrie Piper of Bakersfield, six grandchildren, one stepgranddaughter and eleven great-grandchildren.
