A resident of the Bakersfield area for more than 65 years, Don leaves behind a host of family and friends who love him dearly. Each of us that knew him could relay a story of a man who cared for others and left a smile on the faces of those he encountered. Our memories of him will never fade. Don was born in Bakersfield, where after his return from serving his country in the Air Force, he met the young woman that was to be his wife. After their first date Don and Hazel saw each other every day until they were married, a marriage which lasted more than 47 years. He lived to see 2 children, grow, get married, and have families of their own: Jim and Michelle Hardy, Michael and Robin Whitaker. The Christian Bible refers to the event of a believer seeing the birth of their grandchildren as a blessing from the God of all creation. Don, proud of his wife, children and grandchildren, was truly blessed. Don also leaves behind a sister, Louise Smith, with whom he was very close. Other survivors include numerous nieces, nephews and cousins whose lives he touched over the years in special ways. Don was preceded in death by his parents, Jess and Mildred Whitaker; brother, Richard Whitaker; and sister, Barbara Lou Whitaker. Don had many interests in his life. He was an avid golfer, winning many trophies in amateur contests and a die hard fisherman who took any opportunity particularly with his family. He enjoyed camping and the occasional game of cribbage, any occasion. Don was an accomplished chef; a gift he used to serve many people especially those in his church where he was very involved. Don also spent some time preaching Gods word at different churches and convalescent homes. When he spoke his voice and presentation captured the attention of his audience. Each of us who had the opportunity to know Don is much better for it. He was a man who loved, respected, and enjoyed life and loved his Maker. Don departs from us to go to his eternal home, a home prepared by Yeshua, Jesus, Gods Messiah. He goes to walk on streets of gold, to sing with the angels, and to live in paradise. Each of us will grieve our loss and celebrate his gain. Those of us with the hope of salvation will see him again soon.
