He is survived by his beloved wife of 30 years, Betty Wigall; his sisters, Dorothy, Mildred and Mary Elyn; his brother, Bud; his son, Steve Ray and wife, Lolly; son, Curtis and wife, Paula; daughter, Phyllis and husband, Ronnie; daughter, Joni and husband, Greg; daughter, Jani and husband, Steve; grandchidlren, Don, Lisa, Jolynn, Jason, Melissa, Martin, Sarina, Justin, and Zachary; and great-grandchild, Jerrica. Don was preceded in death by his mother, Harriet; father, Cecil Ray; brother, Gene; sister, Barbara; his first wife, Irma; daughter, Georgia Lee; and grandchild, Ronald. Don was born June 13, 1921, in Normal, Illinois; was raised on the familys farm in Newton; and when war was eminent, traveled to Chicago in 1939 to enlist in the Navy. He served proudly on the Louisville during the battle of Midway, and ended his naval career as Chief of diesel operations on the submarines Apagon and Requin. Although he was involved in many harrowing engagements in the South Pacific, he treasured his service memories and spoke fondly of his experiences. After an honorable discharge, Don, wife, Irma and daughter, Georgia Lee, lived briefly in Illinois and Wyoming before settling in Oildale in 1951 where he began a 30-year Agri-chemical career with the Ortho Chemical division of Standard Oil as a field etymologist and licensed pesticide advisor. Don was involved in the Oildale community, serving on the Beardsley School Board, and as Cub Master of Pack 17. During his professional life in the Central Valley Agri-business community he received numerous awards and accolades. After his official retirement, Don became Papa Wigall to over 200 children in the family pre-school daycare (Grandmas House), which he ran with his wife, Betty. Don always had something good to say about those he met; his outlook was positive; his integrity was solid as a rock; and his word was his bond. Don enjoyed traveling, and uncovering new experiences to share with those he loved. Dons family and friends will remember his sense of humor, his bright and curious mind, his fascination with science, his exuberance for life, his love for the Central Valley, which he called Gods Country; but they will especially treasure the depth and strength of his compassion and his insight. Dons generosity and wisdom enriched the lives of all who knew him; and many family members can say that more than once it saved their lives and kept them on the right track.
