He grew up in Wasco, graduated from Wasco High School, and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1950-1954. He met Virginia while stationed in Washington DC and they married in 1955 and moved to Bakersfield. Jerry worked for Union Oil for over 20 years, worked in land leasing, and was a partner in an independent oil company until his retirement. Jerry was an active member of AA and valued the friendships he developed there even more than the number of years of sobriety. Among the AA Dog Pound, Old Dog was mentor to many. He was fiercely protective of his special recipe beans. He was a pilot, a fisherman, and enjoyed trips to Laughlin with his buddies and sons. He took up water skiing in his 40s and snow skiing in his 50s. He chaired the Piles Boys Camp barbeque in the 1970s and was active in many service organizations. On his last trip to Laughlin he brought home more than he took. Jerry is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Virginia; brother and sister-in-law, Gordon and Fran Willey; sister, Nancy Fieber; sister and brother-in-law, Mary Ellen and Jim Rodgers; son and daughter-in- law, Martin and Twila Willey; son and daughter-in-law, Terrence and Carol Baker Willey; son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Carla Willey; grandchildren, Ryan, Tyler, Katherine, Lauren, Elizabeth and Michael; and many relatives and friends. The family thanks Hoffman Hospice for their care and support during his final journey. Jerry will be greatly missed. A celebration of his life will be held at 1:00 p.m. November 6, 2005, at the Bakersfield City Firefighters Hall, 7320 Wible Road. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society. Legacy.com Published in the Bakersfield Californian on 11/1/2005.
