Velma was born on September 27, 1913, in Little Rock, Arkansas to John and Gertie Price. She moved to Bakersfield in 1944. She was a loving wife to Audie who passed away in 1970. Her son, Johnny Woodard; her grandson, Troy Woodard; her 16 brothers and sisters and her parents, preceded her in death. She is survived by her son, Kenneth and wife, Paula Woodard; son, Jerry Woodard. Also her ex daughters-in-law, Pat Yost, Sandra Carter, Carol Woodard, Joan Anthony and special friend, Sharon Heriford. Additionally, she is survived by her grandchildren, Rachel Woodard, Eileen Carter and husband Aaron, Celeste Woodard and fiancé Tom Tarrer, Trent Woodard, Randal Woodard, Jerry Woodard II, Tracy Pounds and husband Scott, Stacy McKenzie and husband Shawn; 4 great-grandchildren, Leslie and Wesley McKenzie, Krista Pounds and Sydney Carter. Velma was a wonderful example of Christian love and service. She was a loving daughter taking care of her father after he became blind until his death at 93. She was a loving wife taking care of her husband until his death in 1970. Velmas good sense of humor carried them through the depression when she and her husband first came to California; and California bought them bus tickets to encourage them to move back to Texas. As a loving mother, Velma taught her three sons to be productive members of society. Velma was a self-sufficient woman who was never afraid of a hard days work. She mowed her own lawn, canned her own food and sewed many of her own clothes. She spent countless hours taking care of her grandchildren, rocking babies, making cookies, and telling stories of the old days. Velma tirelessly served her church and community. She worked in the nursery, visited the sick, uplifted the homebound, and served as an election worker. When we become discouraged or depressed we can remember Velma Woodards life as a shining example of fortitude and kindness! Legacy.com Published in the Bakersfield Californian on 1/6/2006.
