He was born in Las Vegas, Nevada, on April 6, 1937 and moved to Bakersfield when he was 10 years old. He was educated in local schools and graduated from BHS in 1956. He started his career in the grocery business at the age of 14 and worked in various grocery stores until 1969 when he became a locomotive engineer for the Santa Fe-Burlington Northern Railroad. He retired in 1999 after a long and successful career with the railroad. He worked the mountain between Bakersfield and Barstow. Jack was well loved by his high school sweetheart and wife of almost 49 years, Becky. He also leaves to cherish his memory, daughter and son-in-law, Jill Rebecca and Bruce Mushaney, son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Ginger Whitehead; grandchildren, Jacob, Whitney (Critter) and Hunter (Tuff) Whitehead. He will also be missed by sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Joy and George Streit; and his wonderful canine companion, Annie. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 23, 2005, at 2:00 p.m., at Hillcrest Memorial Chapel. The family would like to invite everyone to a gathering immediately following the service, across the street from Hillcrest, in the Community Center, at Kern Canyon Estates, 8536 Kern Canyon Road.
