Joseph was born on March 10, 1912, in Wilbarger County, Texas. Growing up on a small farm amongst a large family he learned early the importance of a strong family, hard work and a good sense of humor, all of which remained part of him all of his days. Athletics were also a large part of his young life as Lefty was an outstanding baseball player as well as the Texas State Champion Quarter Miler in 1931 in record time. As patriarch of the Wyatt family, his athletic excellence was passed down to future generations in many sports. After his marriage to Reedie Bertha Hodges June 17, 1933, they moved to Long Beach, California in 1936. Boyce and Reddie Jo, as called by closest friends had arrived in the Golden State with the first two of seven children and had two more before moving to his beloved Bakersfield in 1947. It was here Joseph was able to achieve his goal of purchasing his first home which he and family occupied for 56 years. He worked for National Life Insurance Co., Carnation Co., and Rheingold Brewery before purchasing his own business in 1954 Luckys Market. He figured hed had more than his share of picking cotton in Texas and was more suited to the grocery business. Lucky worked along with his family at the market until retirement in 1978. Joseph never forgot his upbringing and tough times of his Red River youth. Whenever someone needed a helping hand he always made sure to extend one. Joseph lived a life filled with many good times after retirement with most revolving around his numerous offspring. Gardening was indeed his passion and he farmed his impeccable gardens of fruit, vegetables and flowers relentlessly daily. It was a rare day when he missed listening to a Dodger game and was always ready for a game of dominoes with friends and family. In his earlier days he fished the upper Kern River for trout and never missed an opening day of pheasant and dove seasons with his sons and good buddies. He was a family man until the end and so very proud of all. He was surrounded by many loving family members and friends in his last days. Joseph had been blessed with a long, healthy and fruitful life indeed. There will be many family, friends and neighbors who will miss Joseph dearly. Theyll miss his likeable personality and hearty laugh as well as compassion and love of life and people. Theyll remember his tales of youthful exploits and the life adventures a man of 93 years has experienced. Joseph said, Dont shed one tear for me, I have had a good life. We hear that a young Lefty has just arrived up younder in the biggest leagues of them all where they play double-headers everyday and his name is Joseph Wyatt. Well never forget him. Special thanks to Selena and Susanne and all the great folks at Optimal Hospice and The Carriage House for making Josephs last time with us so nice.
