Gene was a life-long resident of Kern County. He attended East Bakersfield High School where he served as Student Body President in 1943-44. Gene married Pat Mills in 1946, and the couple was married for 59 years. Gene served Kern County for 40 years with the U.S. Forest Service, Kern County Fire Department, and the Kern County Sheriffs Office where he was Captain in charge of Search and Rescue and Substations. Capping his public service career, he served as Kern County Supervisor (District 3) for twelve years. Gene was proud to service Kern County with honesty and integrity and always had the publics best interest at heart. Gene and Pat retired to the Kern River Valley in 1984 where he remained active in the Kern River Valley Historical Society and the Kern Valley Habitat Club. Gene loved the Kern River Valley where he enjoyed his family and friends, but he was always ready for a spontaneous road trip to visit his daughter and her children in Arizona. Gene is survived by his wife Pat; son and daughter-in-law Grant and Terrie Young; daughter and son-in-law Gena (Peggy) and Gary Harnisch; ten grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Genes sister, Joy Bostedt, lives in Idaho with her husband and family and his brother Jeff Young lives in Washington with his wife, Kim. Genes brother-in-law and good friend, Dan Mills, resides in Tehachapi with his wife, Jewel. The family will have a private service and in lieu of flowers, they request donations be made to the Kern River Valley Search and Rescue Unit.
