Fr. Jack Estes of St. Lukes Episcopal Church will officiate. Van was born in Sherman, Texas to Van Sr. and Clara Zachery, the first of three children. The family moved to Bakersfield in 1922 and Van attended local schools graduating from KCUHS in 1935. As a young man he sang professionally with the Jack Monan Band and also was an amateur boxer. He then began working as a machinist for the Southern Pacific Railroad. On October 12, 1940 he married Marie Keyser, a union that lasted over 64 years and they had three sons. Van served three years in the Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater. Upon his return home he resumed working for the railroad, then in 1947 joined the Kern County Fire Department, from which he retired as Captain in 1972. He was an influential role model for many young seasonal firemen who later chose firefighting as a career. Van and Marie were active in the KCFD Retirees, Native American Pow-Wows, and St. Lukes Church. Throughout the years they and their sons loved spending time at the mountain property in Twin Oaks, running a small cow-calf operation. Van was preceded in death by Marie in May of this year, and sisters, Betty Whalen and Sylvia Roberson. Survivors include sons, Daniel and wife, Chris, David and wife, Sandra, and Dennis and wife, Linda; grandchildren, Natalie Menees and Paul, Michelle Zachery, Ann Garcia and Rick, Amy Zachery, and Dennis Lee Zachery and Raelynn and great-grandchildren, Taylor, Alexandra, Trace, Kaitlynn, Hailey and Ryan.
