He was born to Edd and Bee Zollinger May 17, 1922, in Medill, Oklahoma. The family moved to Delano, CA, when Bud was a young boy where he attended Earlimart and Delano schools. In World War II he spent three years in the European Theater with the U.S. Rangers. His war injuries included a lost lung, three ribs and a back vertebrae. He was decorated with the Silver Star which is the nations third highest medal of valor. He also received two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Clusters. After the war he became a jockey. For fifteen years he rode at all the tracks in northern California, plus Portland Meadows where he was a leading rider. His wife, Irene, shared his love for horses as a trainer which he joined her as a trainer when his riding days were over. Bud is survived by his wife of 67 years, Irene; daughter, Donna and her husband, Jay Garside of Stringtown, OK; son, Butch Zollinger and wife, Bell of Bakersfield, CA; grandchildren, Johnny and wife, Natalie and Billy and wife, Sharlee Garside, Brandon Zollinger and Suzetta Zollinger; eight great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his brother, Adolph Zollinger; sisters, Lucille Johnson, Sue Ayers, Juanita Gallagher, Jean Di Gorgio and Evelyn Welch, as well as many other family members and friends and Stephanie Garside. He was preceded in death by his twin sons, David and Dwight; brother, Clifford and his wife, Kay and grandson, Joe Garside and great-grandson, Justin Garside. A memorial service will be held October 27, 2005, at 11:00 a.m., at Church of Christ, 11th & Oxford, in Delano. Jay Lockenridge and Don Gallagher will officiate.
