Upon graduation from Austin High School in Chicago he entered the U.S. Navy in 1946 and retired in 1966 after 20 years as a Chief Electricians Mate. He traveled extensively in the Navy, made one world cruise and visited ports on every continent. Robert then worked for the Department of Water Resources, primarily at the A.D. Edmonston Pumping Plant at the Grapevine. He retired from the Department of Water Resources as a Hydro Electric Plant Electrical Supervisor in 1990. Robert will be remembered as a loving father and grandfather who enjoyed woodworking and making doll houses for his granddaughters and friends. He was a member of the Moose Lodge #2178, the American Legion Post #26 and a charter member of the USS Hamner (DD-718) reunion roster. He was also a die hard fan of the Chicago Bears. He is preceded in death by his parents, one brother, two sisters and his grandson, Timothy. He is survived by six children: son, Robert W. Zobel and daughter-in-law, Becky of Bakersfield; son, Roger G. Zobel and daughter-in- law, Shizuko of San Diego; daughter, Vickie G. Tomastik-Sproatt and son-in- law, Gary of Simi Valley; son, Alan D. Garrison and daughter-in-law, Laurie of Bakersfield and son, Blake J. Garrison of Bakersfield and daughter, Kelly J. Ice and son-in-law, Ray of Bakersfield; grandchildren: Phillip, Sarah, Jeremy, Stefanie, Hillery, Katie, Dorrey, Tiffany, Rebekah, Benjamin, Scott, Olivia, Michael, Kelly, Shelby, Stuart, Jeffrey, Matthew, Mark and numerous nieces, nephews and friends throughout the United States, Germany and Japan. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to U.S.S. Hamner Reunion Association, Frank L. Magistro, 1021 SW Randolph Ave., Topeka, KS 66604-1559.
