Lower Lake Herndon-Copsey Pioneer Cemetary, in Lower Lake, Lake County California. This Cemetary is located in Lower Lake, Lake County California. It is about 150 miles N of San Francisco. From the intersection of State hwys 53 and 29 in Lower Lake, take Morgan Valley road 1 Block to the center of town. Turn left on Lake Street, go 1 block to 2nd Street and turn right. At the end of 2nd St. turn left onto WiLower Lake Historical Schoolhouse Museum Listnchester Street. Winchester Street winds for 2 blocks, then turn dead right onto Big Bear Road. Stay on Big Bear Road about .3 miles, turn left on Stagecoach Lane. Take Stagecoach Lane to the dead end, turn around. As soon as you are pointed in the opposite direction, stop. The entrance to the cemetary is immediately to your right. You must climb to the top of the hill, in the center of the cemetary, to find the remaining markers. This cemetary has been vandalized and desecrated for many years. The people living adjacent to the cemetary property have removed some of the tombstones and are using them for decorative as well as architectural purposes, such as propping up their porch. Other stones have been broken, defaced, etc. I counted 37 burial plots. Of these 24 had stones remaining. 21 stones were still readable. CONTRIBUTORS* The Lower Lake Historical Schoolhouse Museum had a list of burials in their loose files. The origin of their list is unknown. 20 of the names and corresponding dates matched mine exactly, therefore, I am including an additional 10 burials from their list which I didn't have. 2 additional burials are included for the Copseys, for whom the cemetary is named, but for whom no burial records can be found. The LLHSM also has a "contributed" list, source unknown, in their loose files. This list has corresponding names, however, dates were not as reliable. This list has an additional 8 burials which match neither other source. All listings have a note in the last column citing its source. Additionally, 29 burials were relocated to the Oddfellows Cemetary in Lower Lake (now the Lower Lake Cemetary) early in the 20th century. All were from 3 large family plots. Their existence is noted with the other info for relatives remaining in the pioneer cemetary. There is a Memorial Marker on a large rock at the entrance to the cemetary which states that the first burial was in 1856 and the last in 1925. I can find no records with either one of these dates.
