WILLIAM B. LONG.—Mr. Long was born in Jackson county, Alabama, June 17, 1828.
Three years later, the family removed to Madison county. Arkansas. In the spring
of 1854, he came overland to California, stopping in Yuba, and then in Butte
county, where he ranged a band of cattle he had driven across the plains. In
1855 he mined on Feather river, and then mined and merchandised in Plumas county
until the fall of 1856. He then lived two years in Butte county, his wife having
come to California with her father, General Allen Wood. He then farmed in Plumas
county, and in 1862 came to Susanville, and purchased William Weatherlow's farm,
just north of the town, which has since been his home. Mr. Long is a democrat in
politics. December 23, 1852, he married Miss Mary E. Wood. They have six
children: John T., born June 15, 1853; George B., May 25, 1857; Allen J., May
19, 1859; Edith G., April 12, 1861; Arthur W, January 7, 1864; Margaret Ann,
October 4, 1870.
